Common Eye Disease

No matter how much care you take of your eyes, you will from time to time encounter some kind of eye problems. While some of these problems cause very little harm to the eyes, some may lead to permanent blindness. It is always advisable to consult the doctor.

Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis)

Eyelid inflammation, or blepharitis, is a common disorder in which the eyelids become red, inflamed, and accumulate build-up around their edges. Fortunately, it is non-threatening to eyesight, although uncomfortable and sometimes unsightly.

What Causes Eyelid Inflamation?

There are two types of eyelid inflammation, with different causes for each:

Anterior blepharitis affects the outer part of your eyelid (where your eyelashes are located), and is most commonly caused by bacteria, from both hair and eyebrows.

Posterior blepharitis affects the inner part of the eyelid, and results from excess oil being produced by the glands near the eyelashes.

Symptoms of Eyelid Inflammation
  • Feeling of foreign object in the eye
  • Excessive tearing and/or itching
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Red, swollen eyelids
  • Eye redness
  • Dry eye
  • Crusted or scaly texture
Treatment for Eyelid Inflammation

In many cases, eyelid irritation can be taken care of at home. Your doctor may recommend eyelid scrubs and warm compresses to loosen any build-up and keep the eyelids clean. If your symptoms do not improve your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or steroid eye drops.
